Our mission at PaleoMD is to support the growing national movement of health consciousness and sustainable farming practices. The food industry is our primary resource for life. It has the power to deteriorate our bodies if we make poor choices in nutrition or to help us thrive by making informed ones. It is the prescription we take multiple times a day that has the capability to help treat and even prevent chronic illness.
At PaleoMD, we believe that everyone has a right to know where their food comes from. We believe everyone has the right to know what is in their food. We believe everyone has the right to feed their bodies with real nutrition. In short – food is medicine.
I am infinitely grateful that my brother, Dani, introduced our family to the Paleo Diet, which we fully embraced together, because it spoke to our basic intuition and practicality. Although the name stems from the word “Paleolithic” and is rooted in the idea that we should be eating what our bodies have evolved to eat, our modern interpretation is to eliminate foods from our bodies that act as allergens or irritants. This includes food processed to the point of minimal nutritional value containing grains, dairy, artificial additives, and preservatives.
Paleo has also come to be known as a saving grace for those who suffer from Celiac Disease, as well as those whose immune systems are compromised or who suffer from food allergies. And the applicability extends far beyond this subset. Many are finding that Paleo serves as a great baseline diet brining them to a closer understanding of how their bodies react to certain food groups, as well as helping them to perform at an optimal level.
My brother stumbled across the Paleo Diet while in medical school at the Cleveland Clinic. He had become increasingly aware of – and frustrated by – seeing sick patients being treated with western medication but without proper nutritional counseling.
What catapulted us into action was our last family vacation to our father’s homeland of Nicaragua. After traveling the country and witnessing firsthand that the effects of a poor diet extended far beyond the borders of the developed world, we had a deep swelling feeling that all people have the right to nutritious food as well as to the knowledge of what makes them sick. With the incredibly high rate of diabetes and general malnutrition in Nicaragua coupled with high rates of obesity and food-related health issues in America, this motivated us to start a food business that would help fight the increasing rates of preventable diseases and declining quality of life.
At this point, you may be wondering Why pizza? Well, they are typically a cumbersome meal for people to make on their own at home, but they are also one of the most popular and well-loved treats consumed in households across the country and in many other parts of the world. For those who are unable to eat traditional pizzas, or for the athlete or parent who wants to make sure that what they are eating or feeding their families is not junk, our PaleoPizzas serve as perfect solution.
It is important to us – and should be to everyone in the world – that our food is chemical-free and contains products from sustainable farming. Although there are many hurdles to scaling such an effort, we believe that there is a way to grow a company while maintaining the integrity and quality of the product.
My name is Patricia Urcuyo, and my goal is to change the world one pizza at a time.
